Happy #worldsoilday! Here's a sneak peak at the April illustration for the 2023 Climate Farmer Calendar, out this week. This month features Cedar Circle Farm & Education Center in Vermont, whose practices draw down carbon and help build resilience to the effects of climate change in the land and community by creating healthy soil and nutritious, local food.
Cover cropping, organic low-till and no till cultivation, and Korean natural farming are some of their strategies for keeping carbon in the ground and nurturing an incredibly diverse and teeming soil microbiome. They use regular soil testing, observation and adjustments in their practices to keep them on track, and share their knowledge with education on the farm and in classrooms.
If you live in the Upper Valley of Vermont and New Hampshire, you can pick up a copy of the 2022 Climate Farmer Calendar starting Friday, or pre-order today. Each month features an Upper Valley farm rendered by a VT/NH artist, and includes an aspect of how agriculture fits into the causes — and the solutions — to global warming. Plus! How you can manage your garden and yard for climate stewardship!
I'm honored to have worked with some of these farms to create their illustrations, and to be seeing this project into the world, with the massive help of Vital Communities, and funding from USDA.
